森村誠は、単なる英国帰りのコンセプチュアル・アーティストではない。視覚的にスタイリッシュな英字の新聞紙や書籍などを素材に用いているが、その表面的な印象だけで彼の世界観を決して計ることはできない。彼の代表作《Dear Thomas》シリーズはその典型である。印刷物上の「T H O M A S」以外の、何万もの文字を修正液のペン先で塗り消してThomasを探し続けていくという設定は、馬鹿馬鹿しくただただ呆れるばかりである。しかし、この報われない彼の行為の裏側には、何とも言えないシニカルさが充満している。彼の傑作を目の当たりにすると鼻で笑ってしまう、それが私の常なのである。
今回、森村が修正液で浮かび上がらせる文字は「HOPE」。これまでの彼の仕事には珍しく、真剣な眼差しのみで構築される作品群となる。シニカルさが影を潜めた彼の新シリーズに、想定外の新展開を期待している。
