Under the theme of “Life and Art”, Fuchu Art Museum was opened in the metropolitan “Fuchu no Mori Park” in October, 2000. The museum has organized a project exhibition introducing modern and contemporary art works, a permanent exhibition displaying their collection, and a special exhibition space which regularly introduces works by Noriyuki Ushijima, an artist with a connection with Fuchu city. The mainstay of their collection is Japanese art after the modern period. There are many works showing us the interrelation with western art and the development of the traditional sense of beauty in Japan. Works collected are those by Kokan Shiba, Denzen Aodo, Ikkyu Okubo, Ryusei Kishida, Michisei Kono, Kaita Murayama, and Raphael Collin, who taught Ryusei Kishida and others in France. The best use is made of these collections in the special exhibition, such as the one with a unique take showing the process of how in modern Japan the concept of the art from the West was received. Moreover, there are also many collections by artists with connections to Fuchu city and the Tama region. There is a unique open studio room where we can see the process of artists’ work productions. There, production by contemporary artists is opened to the public of several times a year. Educational events, such as workshops, are also held in this museum. Besides this, there are many other facilities including a citizens’ gallery, an art library, a museum shop, as well as a café, in the pavilion. Address: Sengen-cho 1-3, Fuchu, Tokyo |
