Opened within the Kamakura Hachimangu shrine precincts, Kanagawa in 1951, the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura was the first modern public museum in Japan. It currently consists of the Kamakura pavilion, the Kamakura annex and the Hayama pavilion. The Kamakura pavilion, which was designed by Junzo Sakakura, is also famous as one of the best modern constructions in Japan. The Kamakura annex was opened in 1984 designed especially for exhibiting the collection. The Hayama pavilion was opened in 2003 and the building design is characterized by the way it takes natural light and scenery into the exhibition rooms.

The museum has the dual aims of exhibition and collection, and introduces domestic as well as international modern and contemporary art to the public by holding three to four exhibitions a year. More than 10,000 examples of Japanese modern artworks are also well-known at the quality as well as the quantity in this field.
