TAKANO was born in 1980 in Kanagawa and graduated from Tama University of Arts in 2003 majoring in print. He obtained an MA in oil painting in 2005 from Aichi Prefectural University of Arts Graduate School. After lecturing in oil painting at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, he has now been an assistant for the print department at Tama University of Arts since 2007.

Takano produces works in an original technique he calls “monotype”: a technique in which he takes a picture, outputs it to film using an ink-jet printer (the ink doesn’t dry since it isn’t absorbed by film), then decals the film to a support, such as a panel and paper, with a small amount of water. Air is generated between the support and the film and comes out of the space between the support and film, remaining on the film as white spots. A number of patterns which look like drops of water then appear on the film.

Using this technique, Takano visually achieves a medium of vivid hues, which also have a ‘moist’ quality to them. The feelings of quality, colour, and the emotionalism in his themes are the features of Takano’s art. These arise from the balance between the artist’s control and events which happen by accident.
