In a Landscape
Editor's Note

Through exhibits which were created using familiar sounds and ready-made products, this exhibition shows us a sound landscape which makes us look at our surrounding environment. Some works are displayed in an unexpected way. Therefore, I recommend you look around the exhibition hall carefully, and keep your ears attuned to the sounds around you. The worthiest creation to be seen in this exhibition is Tetsuya Umeda’s “○ (Shirotama)”. In this work, mixed sounds are created using a complex, fine and unpredictable Rube Goldberg machine (Please recall the “PythagoraSwitch” [NHK] or “Der Lauf Der Dinge” [1987] made by Peter Fischli and David Weiss.) and provide us with a sound space which we have never experienced before. Here, I would like to add that I was pleased by the sight of smiles suddenly appearing on the faces of all viewers when they entered this space. For your information, admission to the venue, the Kyoto Art Center, is free. Therefore, of course, you can enjoy “trial listening” in this exhibition without charge. (Translated by Nozomi Nakayama)
