Opened in 2001 in Suginami, Tokyo, "youkobo ART SPACE" was initially housed in a former clinic and tuberculosis sanatorium used in the 1950's as an art school, a sculpture atelier, and in the 1090’s as an animation studio for a various kind of art activities. It was since reopened in 2001 as a complex art facility providing two galleries and creation studio spaces for further activities. It has focused on art activities that deeply intersect with the region as well as exchanges with global artists. At the same time, the artist in residence started in 1996 became full-scale, and youkobo ART SPACE has developed steadily. In Tokyo, it is a valuable space for linking up young domestic and overseas artists through exhibitions and stay-overs.

youkobo ART SPACE has continued to offer itself as a place of international exchange within the region through art as a secretariat of an incorporated nonprofit organization "JTAA Tokyo & Istanbul" and "Forest executive committee of Trawl". Those activities bring an international wind to the region as was seen in the workshop "Art Kids" with elementary school children in the region, and an outdoors art exhibition titled "Forest of Trawl" at Zenpukuji Park. In Japan, there is often a wall between art and society and daily life. However, the activities of youkobo ART SPACE have helped make the walls between art and society, word and race, and between the generations barrier-free, and have also encouraged many people to participate in and experience art.
