Vibeke Tandberg's photomontage and collage works of photography and film have power to disjoint the ordinary reality. A do-gooder woman in Africa (Aftermath, 1994). A woman covered her face with her beautiful blond (Beautiful, 1999). An old man going up and down a staircase (Old Man Going Up and Down a Staircase, 2003). These are all manipulated self-portraits/ representations. The examination of the issues around identity, the dislocation of the subjects, and the interrogation of social roles and conventions can be found through these works. Tandberg herself is often represented in her own works, making the peaceful outsider's position of the viewers less stable. Tandberg's aesthetically sophisticated works also embrace the sense of humor. She became a childlike adult, who jumped up and down on her father's bed in his oversized clothes (Jumping Dad, 2000). Playfulness that her works always embrace share the emancipatory force of humor in art with Surrealists and Dadaists. At the same time, her eyes are acutely sober. They seem to liberate us from the invisible net of rules and roles. Concept:
Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to present Vibeke Tandberg's new works, the Amy Winehouse series. It includes Winehouse Variations, paintings on prints of paparazzi photographs of the British R&B/soul singer Amy Winehouse, Untitled(Wallpaper), a large wallpaper with Winehouse's images in a decorative pattern, a photograph work Winehouse Flower #1, and a film A Real Feeling. These works deal with how the celebrity is consumed, and "undoing the vulnerability (of the celebrity) exposed by the press and restoring dignity of the subjects" (by the artist). The original images are altered by Tandberg, but by doing so she underlines what is already there. We will also have the limited artist book, A.W. Abstractions (Onestar Press) available for sale.
