Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to announce our exhibition “sur-impression” with Tsuyoshi Tane. Tane was born in 1979 in Tokyo and is currently working as an architect in Paris. While enrolled at Hokkaido Tokai University, department of architecture, he studied from 2000 – 2001 at HDK / Chalmers Technological University, Gothenbourg, Sweden. After graduating in 2002 from Hokkaido Tokai University, department of architecture, he went the same year as a research student to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark and started subsequently working at Henning Larsens Tegnestue A/S, Copenhagen (2003-04). He worked from 2005 – 2006 at David Adjaye Associates, London and founded in 2006 with Dan Dorell (Italy) and Lina Ghotmeh (Lebanon) DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS in Paris. The team received in 2006 the 1st Prize in the international competition for the design of the New Estonian National Museum (completion in 2013), the Award “Nouveaux Albums des Jeunes Architectes 07-08” by the French Ministry of Culture, France and also in 2008, the Award “Rassegna Lombarda di Archetura Under 40” by the Architects Association of Milan, Italy. Being highly appreciated especially in Europe, DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS were chosen by the English magazine “ICON MAGAZINE” (issue 58) for “THE 20 ESSENTIAL YOUNG ARCHITECTS” and “10 for 2010” by the German magazine “Designbuild”. Design by the team is based on the belief in a unique architecture which refers to “Specificity of a place, the context of history and memory” The concept for the New Estonian National Museum is based upon this approach. At the international competition for the museum which is going to be a symbol of Estonia - a country that gained independence from the former Soviet Union in recent years - DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS focused on an abandoned airstrip used by the former Soviet air force and proposed a museum connected to this former landing field. This radical proposal connects the past history of occupation with contemporary culture. While evoking within Estonia controversy and feedback, it gained an internationally high reputation and won the 1st Prize. DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS also collaborated with practitioners in different fields: They were in charge of scenography for the three performances, “SHIKAKU”(2004), “PLAY 2 PLAY” (2007) and “ZONE - nomadic”(2009) by the dance company Noism headed by Jo Kanamori. They also did scenography for the 2007 spring / summer fashion show of the brand mina perhonen in Paris (2006) and the exhibition of the brand at Audax Textielmuseum, Tilburg, Holland (2009). They took part in the exhibition of Taka Ishii Gallery at the Frieze Art Fair, London (2008), which examined the relation between the postwar Japanese avant-garde artist group “Jikken Kobo” (1950-1957) and Japanese contemporary artists. This exhibition was very well received. The team is working at the moment at various projects in France, Holland, Lebanon and Tunisia. The exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery presents an installation consisting of two sculptural works which deal with “memory”. This exhibition will be Tane’s first solo show in Japan. * The text provided by Taka Ishii Gallery.
