Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce the exhibition of YAMAMOTO Yoko and WADA Makoto entitled Cinema for Two. 6 paintings which Yamamoto and Wada painted together will be exhibited for the first time in 24 years.

Yamamoto, an etcher and painter, and Wada, an illustrator and graphic designer, deepened their friendship in the 1990s when Wada asked Yamamoto to teach him etching for his picture book about his cat Shizimi. In 1998, they collaborated for the first time on 4 large paintings based on movies they love, Children of Paradise, The Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, and Star Wars, and had exhibitions in our galleries in Nagoya and Tokyo. In the following year, they painted additional 2 paintings, The Third Man and Seven Samurai.

Yamamoto (b. 1952) completed the post graduate course of oil painting at Kyoto City University of Arts in 1978. Her award history includes Seibu Award at Japanese Contemporary Printmaking Awards (1978), Book Design Award at Kodansha Publication Culture Awards (1992) for her book Literature is a Gift of Love, Lifetime Achievement Award at Kyoto Prefecture Culture Awards (2007), and Kyoto City Person of Cultural Merit (2015). Her exhibition history includes Yoko Yamamoto’s Art Amusement Park (2002-03, Isetan Museum, Tokyo and 9 other museums in Japan), Yoko Yamamoto’s Princesses (2009, Agenzia04, Bologna, Italy), Yoko Yamamoto’s Wonderland: Girls in Wonderland (2009-10, Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima, The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama).

Wada (1936-2019) graduated in design from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1959. He worked at advertising company as a designer until 1968 and became independent. In 1974, he won the Book Design Award at Kodansha Publication Culture Awards. His illustrations have been used for the cover of the weekly magazine Bunshun since 1977. Mahjong Horoki in 1984 was the first movie he directed and he directed 3 more movies later. Wada’s award history includes Blue Ribbon Award for Best Director (1989), Kan Kikuchi Award (1994), Mainichi Design Award (1997), and Special Award of The Japan Cartoonists Association (2015). He published more than 200 books. His first retrospective exhibition was held in Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2021
