Opened in 1989, which was also the 100th anniversary of the municipal organization enforcement and 400 years since the fortification of Hiroshima castle, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art has dealt mainly with modern art since World War II, and also actively introduces young artists. It aims to be a general museum of modern art, as seen in its wide ranging collection that includes design and construction. It is located in Hijiyama Park which is famous for its cherry blossoms, and the building was designed by Kisho Kurokawa. The delta roof and the approach plaza similar to the plaza of ancient Europe, remind us of a traditional Japanese warehouse. A unique point that the material used for the building becomes more modern with height, seen in a shift from natural stone, to polished stone, tile, and then to aluminum.
