The antecedent, "Takanawa Museum" moved from Takanawa, Tokyo to Karuizawa, Nagano in 1981, and was renamed to "Sezon Museum of Modern Art" in 1991 at the tenth anniversary of the opening. The Sezon Museum of Modern Art has added and exhibited works of domestic and overseas contemporary art to its collection succeeded from the Takanawa Museum. Its collection is highly evaluated as one of the best collection of the 20th century art, and includes works of overseas artists such as Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Man Ray, Pollock, and Rothko. Besides their collection exhibition that makes the best use of their abundant collection through year, they also hold an enthusiastic special exhibition such as "Art Today exhibition" that interprets changing contemporary art.
