Yugo Kohrogi has moved his home and studio around Kumamoto, Tokyo, Osaka, London, Berlin, the Basque Country, and Bulgaria.
Field studies have yielded rich material for Kohrogi, and his perception of light, food, sound, air, mountains, temperature, city, water, and people, in every place he has been are all reflected in his work in abstract ways and through various techniques.
With a background in printmaking, he participated at an artist-in-residence for a few months in 2019. This took place at the Art Village Shirakino, in Minami-Shimabara, Nagasaki, purportedly known as the place where the first Japanese engraving work was made.
Kohrogi says he feels the need to re-examine what it means for us to see, to look, and to observe. In this exhibition, his new video work, oil paintings and silk-screen printings, which focus on “eyes” as motifs and "the function of eyes", will be premiered.
