The Italian Cultural Institute Tokyo will hold an exhibition of new works in mixed media by Cecco Bonanotte [1942- ], a leading Italian sculptor who was awarded the sculpture field of The 24th Praemium Imperiale in 2012. Including the production of the bronze door of the Vatican Museums, Cecco Bonanotte, a world-famous maestro, has left great footsteps ever. He has a strong bond with Japan, and over 40 years have past since he began visiting Japan regularly. In the course of that, he realized many one-man exhibitions throughout Japan, including the one in Yakushi-ji Temple in Nara. He also has a studio in Tokyo, visits various places in Japan such as Kyoto in the intervals of his work, and has deepened his understanding and attainment of Japanese culture. In this exhibition he expresses homage to Japanese culture that he has accumulated over the years as a triptych of 《HAIKU》《NOH》《KWAIDAN》. One of the works is made in combination with colored boards and heads of Japanese dolls, being seemed as far different from previous bronze sculptures, but we can glimpse his consistent esthetics and philosophy behind them. This is because his interpretation of them –HAIKU that generates infinite emotion by subtraction, NOH that symbolically expresses life and death, KWAIDAN that goes and returns between reality and dream - is connected to the artist’s principle at a fundamental level, producing excellent effect. The new works tell us that the artist’s insight into Japanese Culture isn’t a mere curiosity or Orientalism, but rather has great influence on his philosophy to produce artworks. The exhibition is composed with consecutive works in mixed media, maximum width reaching 9 meters.
