The Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery opened in September 1999 on the third and fourth floors of Tokyo Opera City in Hatsudai, Tokyo. This gallery has 1,000㎡ of floorspace and holds special exhibitions in a variety of artistic expressions after the 20th century including painting, sculpture, photography, images, designs, fashion, and constructions, about four times a year.

The Tokyo Opera City Collection, provided chiefly by Mr. Kotaro Terada, has been highly praised for its collection of works by father and son, Tatsuoki and Fumio Nanbata who have both represented Japan as abstract painters. It is unique in Japan in that the collection has been put together by collectors. The collection presents an overview of contemporary art through the postwar stream of art history.

In accordance with the last wishes of Mr. Tatsuoki Nanbada, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery has also been organising the “project N” exhibition series which introduces emerging artists in Japan. This is a worthwhile project which introduces a new talent, and we can enjoy it as a place to quickly discover emerging artists.
