Kenji Yokoya is an artist who transforms such packing materials as corrugated cardboards-that are only intended to be used practically-into an exquisite spacial and formative art. Wave-form sections inside the cardboard are converted to appear in the outside, and they are reconnected to create square poles. Those poles are hanged in the air standing together. By interfering each other’s movements they create shadows which then invite us into the meditative moments.

“Trees are made into pulps after being cut down. They are used as many kinds of papers, and after the countless reproductions they take on a role as packaging and cushioning materials for their final stage. Trees that have completely lost their original forms still have chances hopefully to be revived as another form again. As recalling the slightest memories within the paper-the memories of carrying on photosynthesis and absorbing carbon dioxide-I just want to re-express the moment of the trees.”
