In 1992, in Roentgen Kunst Institute, Takashi Murakami released Sea Breeze (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa collection). If the starting point of impression as reflection of light, considered the artist, people should be impressed more if there is generating equipment of a stronger light and made 16 mercury lamps of 800w turn on in the gallery. The work applied an intense approach to the simple question of what the visual sense is.
Ultimately, the behavior of seeing fine arts is just to see the light reflected by artwork. Confining ideas, concept, technique inside, we are only looking at the color by catoptric light.
On the other hand, the thought and passion poured into the artwork, and our vision may cause an illusion. There are a lot of people who watched Akira Kurosawa's work and have the image that "evening glow was crimson," though the film was monochrome. We consider that the artwork can become an attractive piece further by adding intersection and the discrepancy of such a physiology and the sense to artist's statement.
Roentgenwerke always referred universality of the work, selected the artists based on it, and constructed the concept of the group exhibition. This group exhibition becomes the first exhibition of the attempt to pursuit for the presence of artwork from a new aspect, setting its theme of searching for the visual sense that is the origin of artwork.
"700 nm (nanometer)" which is the title of this group exhibition is a color of the light which International Commission on Illumination (CIE) has specified as "red." However, at this exhibition, not only the work simply using red but the work in which red was expressed sensuously will be exhibited.
By the way, red is only a physical wavelength and is not told only as a physiological stimulus to an eye. The sense of values of race gives the symbolical significance to the colors. Especially red is one of the colors with much symbolism.
The red used for the robe of Virgin Mary from ancient times as a color is a color of the blood of compensation of the Son of God. In recent years, this color is used for the national flag etc. as a color of the bloodshed in a revolution.
Of course, there is an example with red and the relativity of blood also in Japan. A red sleeveless coat and a red square cushion are given to the person who became the 60th birthday in Japan. This is symbolical manners that give new vitality (blood).
Red is a color of the fire other than the sun, but that is why is a color to feel energy. According to the experiment, temperature seems to slightly rise just to look at the red color. That is why there is the symbolism called passion and the fiery zeal, too. Passion (Italy), philanthropism (France), courage and justice (Indonesia) show this as a color of the national flag.
In 1995, the gallery Beyeler of Basel held the group exhibition with the excellent piece of modern fine arts featuring the work of red entitled "Who’s Afraid of Red" - the title was referred to the title of the Burnet Newman's series of works of 60’s and 70’s. After 2o years from that, unexpectedly, an exhibition on the theme of red with the title of "eeny, meeny, miny, and moe| red,” will be was held at the gallery en arts in Kyoto. This may be the time for us to return to consider again the visual sense which may be the origin of art after many of twists and turns over the expression.
