Julia Chiang:Coming Together, Coming Apart

NANZUKA is pleased to present Brooklyn-based artist Julia Chiang’s first solo exhibition in Japan. Chinese-American artist, Julia Chiang graduated from New York University in 2000 and has participated in numerous exhibitions since, including a collaboration with Ryan McGinness (Dream Garden, Deitch Projects, NY, 2002) and solo exhibitions at New York’s Half Gallery (Security Is Mostly A Superstition, Half Gallery, NY, 2011) and at colette in Paris (Forever And Longer, colette, Paris, 2012). She was chosen as one of “100 Artists to Watch” in Modern Painters magazine in 2012 and is one of the most anticipated young artists representing the Brooklyn art scene.

Chiang uses a variety of materials to create three-dimensional works, installations, paintings, and mixed media pieces. She uses text and familiar imagery that often finds its way through her various mediums. Her process is often repetitious and reveals the imperfections and efforts of the hand-made.

For the upcoming exhibition of new works, Chiang will be exhibiting paintings and three dimensional ceramic sculptures mounted on panels.

"Unlike the venomous snakes that often inspire her color palettes, Julia intends to deceive not as a seductive predator, but as a human attempting- as we all do- to grapple with her own kind. The seemingly simple marks she makes operate on a number of levels: As energy forces that push and pull in different directions, creating unexpected spines, peaks, and gatherings. As repetitive, almost punishing brushstrokes that obsessively pursue a uniformity they know they cannot achieve. As the tiny bursts of embarrassment we all emit in moment of bliss, sadness, fear; bursts that leak out uncontrollably only to be absorbed and disappear just as quickly." (Lumi Tan from the exhibition catalog Coming Together, Coming Apart)

An exhibition catalogue, Coming Together, Coming Apart (Picture Box/NANZUKA), will be published in tandem with the exhibit with an essay by Lumi Tan. The artist will be visiting Japan for the exhibition, and there will be an opening reception with the artist present on July 13 (Saturday) starting at 6:00pm.
