「Albino Alligator」2012, 91 x 116.7cm, oil on canvas

The last exhibition of Marefumi Komura at MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY in 2011, consisted of a series of portrait, scenery and still life paintings described by layers of multiple colors and different textures of paints which are intensely left on canvas, was an extraordinary tense and overwhelming presentation by the young artist.

At this time, Komura challenges to describe how his state of mind has been affected by aftermaths of 3.11 through a sequence of experimental new paintings.

""Fragility" is a primary theme of my creation throughout the time. Things like broken toys, old photographs, whispery sounds, parts of lost objects, etc… which provoke a sense of "frailty", "imperfection" and "fragment" have been the center of my attention ever since I was child."

The theme "fragility" can be found many in Japanese culture which often derived from the concept of impermanence, and Komura as a descendant is also inherited this ethnical character. His aesthetic has been brought up in this culture and climate and his creation brings us a sense of traditionalism and radicalism at the same time.
