Opened in 1986 in Kinuta-park, Setagaya, Tokyo; designed by Shozo Uchii. The museum has approximately 10,000 collections of modern and contemporary art in both Japan and the West. It comprises good collections of Henri Rousseau and Naïve art, Rosanjin Kitaoji, Saburo Miyamoto and the other artists who have lived and worked in Setagaya area. The special exhibitions cover wide ranging art from pre-history to contemporary, and the works of both Japanese and foreign artists. Since large number of artists has been living and working in Setagaya, the museum has three annexes that opened at former sites of the artist's studio.

The nuseum is temporary closed for repair work from July 1, 2011 - March-end, 2012.
