Shintaro Ohata depicts little things in everyday life like scenes of a movie. He is an artist with a unique touch who captures all sorts of light in his work: light at dawn, light at dusk, city lights at night. His paintings remind us that our world is filled with every kind of beautiful light.

He is also known for his characteristic style; placing sculptures in front of paintings, and shows them as one work, a combination of 2-D and 3-D. He is one of the most emerging young artists in Japan, and was also featured on “Giant Robot”, a cultural magazine in the USA last year.

The exhibition title is ‘Everyday life’. Ohata says ‘Every ordinary scenery in our daily lives, such as the rising sun, the beauty of a sunset or a glittering road paved with asphalt on a rainy night, becomes something irreplaceable if we think we wouldn’t be able to see them anymore. I am creating works to capture lights in our everyday life and record them in the painting.”

Our daily lives especially in east side of Japan have completely changed since Tohoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake hit Japan. Many people lose their lives. Many towns and villages were completely destroyed. After losing these, we can finally feel how great an ordinary happiness is. In addition, while walking in the dark city caused by power shortages, we realize that city views in the night Ohata often paints are the symbol of a peace and prosperous society.

Ohata aims to express the importance of “Everyday life” in this exhibition. 8 new works will be exhibited.
