Satsuki Maeda is the artist who draws the minute and delicate world with a ball-point pen. For the first time in three years, her solo exhibition will be held under the theme of Japanese tattoo (irezumi). About 10 artworks which seem to be “eroded away” from inside and outside will be exhibited. At first, she was inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s Tattoo to draw but she started sublimating the darkness of her mind and the mental conflict into her creations gradually. The girls she draws reflect herself consequently. Maeda says, “Tattoo I draw has both aspects; one is something which springs up from the inner life, the other is something effected by the outer world.” “When I am drawing tattoo, I also feel both senses at the same time; [I am the girl who is tattooed] and [I and the man tattoo on her body.]” The figures Maeda draws are very human persons. They seem to send us the heartrending cry because of their egoism and pureness. “A gotten trace” is the mark. No one can escape from this mark because it restricts one’s “memories and experiences”. For example, the mark is on a girl who did not know that she was involved in the big inescapable power but the mark also means a sign that she starts to understand what happened on her and becomes aware of herself. The drastic change on the character building is similar to the growth in the adolescence. In addition, Maeda focuses on the sexual side of the “memories and experiences” in this exhibition. She expresses the fragileness which goes to ruin in the result of “eroded away” from inside and outside by drawing temptations, irresistible something and the existence of the third person (the tattooer)... From the beginning of her career, although she was one of nameless artists, her minute technique with a ball-point pen and her view of the world which has deep philosophy had a good reputation. Recently, Maeda has expanded the opportunity of her exhibition. Please visit to see this exhibition after her digging for her inner life along with the improvement of her technique; this should be the turning point of her career. * The text provided by YOKOI FINE ART.
