The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art opened in April of 2002 at one section of the new city center HALL Kobe in Kobe’s east waterfront district. The Museum holds various feature exhibitions, collection exhibitions, educational programs and events for both children and adults throughout the year. It is a symbol of the restoration of culture after the 1995 South Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake.

The collections of some 8,000 items include sculptures, block prints, western and Japanese style paintings and contemporary artwork that the museum inherited from its predecessor Hyogo Contemporary Museum of Art. These collections are used as the basis of its various activities. From the opening, the main artworks targeted for collection and exhibitions are both domestic and foreign sculptures. Their collection includes sculptures of Rodin, Giacometti, Moore, Yoshitatsu Yanagihara, Yasutake Funakoshi, Tadayoshi Sato, Masakazu Horiuchi et al. The works of these artists give a sweeping view of the history of sculpture in the 20th century.

Also, there are permanent exhibition rooms for artists associated with Hyogo Prefecture. These artists are Heizo Kanayama and Ryohei Koiso who are known for their western style paintings. These include works that were donated by the artists' bereaved families and related parties.

As to contemporary arts, the museum owns many works of the early members (including the leader, Jiro Yoshihara) of a group called "Concrete Art Association" that inaugurated an important avant-garde art movement in the Kansai area in postwar period. The whole of the Yamamura Collection was acquired in 1986 and the works of Tadanori Yokowo who is from Nishiwaki, Kobe abound. There are rich collections of contemporary art. It is also possible to see a current stream of contemporary art as the museum sometimes organizes small feature exhibitions for the works of contemporary artists in their permanent exhibition rooms.

This museum building has straightforward architectonics and various complex spaces designed by the architect, Tadao Ando. The slopes, round decks and open ceiling spaces on the passageway from the entrance to the exhibit rooms prepare your expectations to encounter artworks. The glassed-in corridors that surround exhibition rooms, the ocean view spreads before your eyes and the giant maze-like building blends in with the landscape. Visitors can enjoy the aspect of lighting changes with the hours and seasons as they visit this museum. This unique space provides them with variations and new discoveries every time they visit. Even getting lost in this building can be a nice thrill that is provided by the building.

In this museum there is an art information center where you can search for and refer to art books and materials. You can find a cafe, a restaurant and a museum gift shop inside the building to meet diverse visitor requirements. This art-center-style museum is one of the best museums in the Kansai area.
