Tokyo’s Gallery Kobayashi opened in Ginza in 1977. Gallery Kobayashi is one of the best known art galleries representing Ginza, and it mainly introduces Japanese contemporary art from veteran artists, including Tadashi Kawamata, Yuji Akatsuka, and Keizaburo Okamura, but also includes emerging artists as well. The artists "are obstinate in their own work, and keep sensitively pursuing the possibilities of expression in the present". Their works are produced in the struggle of the age and the art; these are obstinate but flexible, and universal but experimental.

In 1990, they published 'The Eighties – Art in the 1980s' which collected Japanese contemporary artists’ materials and documents. They also held a series of solo exhibitions for the 33 artists included in the publication as a record the age. The gallery also works to coordinate exhibitions with corporations, domestic and overseas art fairs, and cultural exchange exhibitions, as well as supplying art works to museums and community organizations.

Among the represented artists are Tadashi Kawamata, Yuji Akatsuka, Rikiya Iwakuma, Yoshitaka Echizenya, Saburo Ota, Keizaburo Okamura, Etsutomu Kashiwara, Hirotake Kurokawa, Kuniichi Shima, Mariko Sugano, Shozo Suzuki, Naoki Suwa, Tomihiro Nagahara, Kyotaro Hakamata, Akira Baba, and Naoaki Yamamoto.
