The word “Niepce” included in the title is part of the name, Nicephore Niepce (1765-1833), one of the inventors of photography. As shown in a legend that our souls are removed from our bodies if we have our pictures taken, or in a genre (?) of a spirit photo, photography is often regarded as a machine to be used for capturing not only visible things but spirits which cannot be seen in this world. Personally, I also believe such an aspect of photography. This exhibition is said to be held with the aim of “verifying” exactly that “photography is a machine to be used for capturing spirits” through exhibits which were created by three young photographers, Keita Sugiura, Tetsuomi Sukeda and Tomoe Murakami. It is composed of two shows entitled “Box of Niepce/right” and “Box of Niepce/left” and the exhibits are interchanged in the venue during the period of about three weeks. Therefore, I would like to discuss whether the exhibition deserves to be valued or not after viewing all the exhibits by visiting at least once in each show. (Translated by Nozomi Nakayama)
