“art & river bank” opened in February 2002, as an alternative space in a complex buildings more than thirty years old which was built in the location to overview the Tama River in Ota-ku, Tokyo. The group of young artists, independent curators, art directors, and students, etc has been organized under the leadership of critics and curators to search for new styles of exhibition and art projects. It was opened for various kinds of people as a platform for a significant exchange between art and the society. It became an NPO named “art & river bank” in September, 2009.

Since its establishment, "art & river bank" has held projects including the "depositors’ meeting" which shows artists' file, a symposium, a talk event, and a video screening show, along with an exhibition to introduce young artists in Japan. It also participated in the Echigo-Tsumari Summer 2009 as "Atsushi Sugita + art & river bank", and exhibited "Critics coast (critic's coast)" which was composed of a video archive and discussion. Recently, "art & river bank" has extended its networking with various kinds of groups including administrative bodies, and university organizations, etc. regardless of the nationality.
