Han Bat is a new multi-channel sound installation and performance by Carl Stone. Premiere presentation is June 6th, Maison de Radio France, Paris, as part of the Electroacoustic Music Studies Conference, (co-sponsored GRM and Sorbonne). Second presentation will begin June 30, C-Square Gallery Nagoya. Future presentations will be at Shin-Bi Gallery, Kyoto and Diapason Gallery, New York.
Han Bat combines environmental textures and field recordings made in Japan, Thailand, and USA that were recorded using a special 8-channel portable recording system. Processing and spatialization of the sounds is achieved using Max/MSP and based on algorithmic software program that proceed without human intervention, linked to solar position for the installation. In the performance, Stone intercedes and guides the processing, plus adds additional elements.
The 8-channel portable recording system that was used to capture many of the field textures used in Han Bat was developed by Stone in collaboration with Professor Ooizumi Kazufumi, of Chukyo University, and features 8 separate microphone capsules connected to two four-channel recorders, mounted on a specially designed transport bar that is light and small enough for portability.
