Opened in Tenma-bashi, Osaka in 1998, Contemporary Art and Spirits (CAS) was opened as a non-profit art space. Attestation of its incorporated non-profit organization was received in July, 2005, and it became "NPO CAS". It moved to Honcho in 2005 and then to Nanba in March, 2009. Various kinds of people such as artists, curators, art collectors and students participate in it. CAS chiefly introduces experimental works, and also holds exhibitions, lecture meetings, symposiums, performances, and workshops. Overturning the traditional relationship between artists, art galleries or museums, and spectators as those who "create", "show", or "view", CAS provides a chance for free participation in art activities in various ways, with the aim of assisting in re-establishing the original power of art in society. Among the artists who were edxhibited are Fuji Tanaka, Kaori Yamamoto, Yuji Dogane, Yasuko Toyoshima, Kyoko Sawanobori, Kazumi Tsuji, Aiko Miyanaga, Simon Leahy Clark, Motohiro Tomii, Yoshino Iida, Takashi Kunitani, and Nobuyuki Hiramatsu.
