Masaki Fujihata’s withdrawal from the exhibitors of this festival immediately after its opening has caused a stir. It is extremely regrettable that the event does not succeed in calling much attention to the fact that the film works worth seeing are displayed or screened in the event. In fact, the main venues of the festival are Shinko Pier and BankART Studio NYK, but I recommend you to spend more time in the latter than in the former. For instance, the impressive “scenes” shown in Alfredo Jaar’s “The Sound of Silence” (2006) and Lieko Shiga’s “CANARY” (2007), which were created using darkness and light elaborately, would burn into your memory. For movie fans, it would be able to have an opportunity to enjoy the high-quality images and movies, such as “Video Quartet 2002”, in which Christian Marclay exercised his great editing technique to express a beautiful quartet, and “From the East: bordering on fiction” (1995), directed by Chantal Akerman. Particularly, it is a valuable opportunity for us to see the movie directed by Chantal Akerman, whose films have had little or no chance to be presented in theaters in Japan, except for some places, including Maison Franco-Japonaise in Tokyo. In fact, films can never be discussed or criticized unless they are shown to anyone. Therefore, it would be a welcome step for us to be given an opportunity to enjoy masterpieces like the above-mentioned films in this exhibition. For your information, if you wish to visit the film program at Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts (the School Building in Bashamichi) frequently, I recommend you to buy a passport for participating in the program.
