Artist Statement by Satoshi Nishizawa:
I create with camera and the photograph. That means I must have something that I am longing to know or unable to understand about what I am seeing. However, because my purpose is not the picture itself, I always have an option to just pause and look with my own eyes without carrying the camera. My photographs are little off for having this option.

You must realize here the question that is raised is not the choice between “the photograph and the naked eyes,” but the mathematical problem asking you to “measure the distance between the photograph and the unaided eye.” In the attempt to calculate this distance, both “photograph” and “naked eye” merely are symbols, “X” and “y.” While still hesitating over a choice between the two, you would only be able to reach the solution around x≒y. You will need “z” or the “+,””-,” “x,” and “y.” I do not know how difficult this calculation is.

For the time being, the photo media would keep expanding, and you will continue to recalculate the distance with each advance.

After all, the answer is not in the photographs.

Artist Profile:
Born 1983 in Nagano, Nishizawa currently lives in Yamagata City. He graduated from the Image Studies course in the School of Designs at Tohoku University of Art & Design. He received the honorable mention from Cannon New Cosmos of Photography competition in 2007 and 2008. Satoshi Nishizawa received the honourable mention at Cannon New Cosmos of Photography competition in 2007 and 2008. Nishizawa had his first exhibition in Tokyo this past May at INAX Gallery. The exhibition was well received, and he is one of the young hopes in the Japanese art scene. Nishizawa focuses on “what is ordinary” in our surroundings and captures the small discrepancy and distortion in the common balanced everyday environment with his unique method. The images that the pictures convey are ironical and introspective, but the spaces captured are unconstrained rather than biased. The upcoming exhibition consists of 10 photographs which include his latest works. Please join us at our opening reception with the artist on October 31st. * The text provided by Sanagi Fine Arts.
