SUGANO Yumiko "six_2" 2016 Oil on canvas 145.6×72.8cm

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce SUGANO Yumiko's solo exhibition of new works showcasing 13 oil paintings. Sugano (b. 1960) paints containers she has collected from different countries for years. Those containers stand calmly and quietly in the paintings as if they are portraits of humans.

In one long science fiction novel, a man had a horrible older brother. He was nearly killed by his brother several times in his childhood. They later went separate ways, but at the end of the long long story beyond time and space, he came to understand his brother in a surprising way. Although it is just another side story that tends to be missed, I suppose that in fact it was implicitly linked to a central and magnificent theme of the story. It became a lovable story for me owing to that.
The world is filled with side stories that seem to be useless and meaningless. However, even though they look so different and unrelated to each other, everything is quietly and secretly liked in a surprising way.
