2015 solo exhibition

Since the first solo exhibition in 1988, Yokoya Kenji has consistently developed his space molding art work using only corrugated cardboard. His basic and characteristic method is the following. Firstly he cuts the corrugated cardboard into long pieces of 5mm in width, and he joins them so that sectional wave patterns open in succession as the new surface, then he composes those surfaces into a quadratic prism. When we walk through the forest of those quadratic prisms, the wave patterns of their surfaces bring about a dazzling effect of light and shadow, which continues changing depending on our movement, and the whole scenery would give us various imagination.

In recent exhibitions, Yokoya has been adopting the method to hang the prisms with threads from the ceiling. It brought about the effect that the prisms spin round by the wind caused by our movements. This is very important fact. Once we walk in the space, and the prisms begin to spin, every relation between each prism will keep changing endlessly, and the whole scenery can never be the same as the one we have seen at every other moment. Besides, Yokoya has begun to paint his works black from last year. The consequence is that the strong contrast between black prisms and white background gives us more abstractive image and more unusual feeling than before.
