It is with great pleasure that we present Human and Universe: A Drama, and we are honor to introduce the three artists in pursuit of their original expression in print making.

FUKITA Fumiaki was born in Tokushima in 1926. After the graduation from the Tokushima normal school, he began print making in the wake of the art education for pupils. His invention of new techniques with plywood, lauan-wood and oil-based ink let him gather attention as an artist. In 1969, he was engaged as a teacher at Tama Art University and trained many youngers. His motifs such as stars and fireworks in vivid colors show us a magnificent world of art.

HORII Hideo, born in Ibaraki in 1934, studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts and approached print making by himself after the graduation. His print works soon came to be appraised at home and abroad, having many opportunities of presentation. In his world of art are living caricatured humans in the nuance-filled shaded color of aquatint. He died from an illness in 1994 at the age of 60, while being much anticipated further activeness and development.

NAGAOKA Kunito was born in Nagano in 1940 and studied design in Tama Art University. His career began as a graphic designer but he moved to the West Germany 1966, where he learned print making at the State Academies. He received publicity in the works of scenic view, in which the earth are redefined as an indeterminate construction, a natural or an artificial one. Since 1980s, he has been mainly working with various materials derived from plants.

Even though each world of the three artists are quite different, all those three make use of their own techniques effectively with brilliant colors, and express the relation of human beings and the world in unique ways.

In addition, the works exhibited here are mostly donations of late years for deep understanding our museum activities of collection and research on modern Japanese prints. We hope you enjoy the aspects of humans and the worlds around human beings that are created based on the artists' skillful techniques.
