The photographer Kunihiko Katsumata has been working on a project to shoot photos toward the window in hotel rooms around the world from 2005. In these long exposure photographs taken with a tripod, Katsumata captures the outer landscape and the interior sitting simultaneously. Katsumata chose shooting locations from more than 100 regions including Yokohama, Sapporo, New York and Rome. For this exhibition, we will introduce more than ten works selected from them.

While traveling in Italy in 2005, Katsumata noticed that the word camera in hotels, meaning “room”. What happens if we see the inside and outside of the room, that is the camera in Italian, at the same time through the lens of a camera? From such an interest, this project began. In many cases, since the spread of the space and brightness are different between the inside of the hotel window and outside, most people tend to see one or the other. Katsumata has caught the inside and outside of the window flat through the lens of the camera.

The exposure time is between 30 minutes and 6 hours. Not only does a new landscape arise by amplifying the light of the city out the window but also he catches the dark room that cannot be shot with the short exposure. Katsumata presents a landscape that is not divided. In 10 years of shooting, he has captured natural phenomena such as lightning and shooting stars. This project is ongoing using hotels, which connect a variety of human relations, as stages.
