Opened in September 1982 in Tsu, Mie; The Mie Prefectural Art Museum regularly holds a special exhibition on original themes, along with permanent exhibits which systematically introduce the flow of art from the modern ages to present age. It also tries to inform the public through various kinds of community activities such as its ‘remote museum’, a lecture meetings, the open courses, and etc. Moreover, the museum collects and stores over 5,000 works of mainly modern and contemporary Western and Japanese art including works by artists related with Miie Prefecture after the early modern age. In 2003, the museum of Yoshitatsu Yanagihara was opened. This museum introduces the works of Yanagihara, a carver who represents concrete sculpture in postwar Japan.
