Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce the memorial exhibition for KATO Kiyomi (1931-2020). Included in this exhibition are approximately 30 oil paintings and prints from the collection of Mr. S who was closely acquainted with Kato. Kato depicts fictious scenes like stage sets—viewers on this side and the stage on the other side, hands stretching out suddenly, a gentle face of a woman with lowered eyes, a mirror which reflects nothing. Those are not far apart from everyday life but are in the illusional world that we see when we look back casually. Born in Tokyo, Kato studied printmaking under KOMAI Tetsuro, the leading printmaker in post-war Japan. He started to present print works at Tokyo International Print Biennale and Shunyo Art Exhibition in the 1960s. Since 1980s, he has had exhibitions of prints and objects in our gallery.
