Opened in 1993 in Yanaka, Tokyo, this is one of the most renowned galleries of contemporary art of Japan for introducing to the world Japanese avant-garde artists, such as Tatsuo Miyajima and Kohei Nawa, and for helping exceptional artists from abroad, such as Anish Kapoor and Julian Opie, to establish a presence in Japan.
It is also well-known for its unique building which was renovated from a venerable public bath house with a 200-year history. The interior of the building has great height and depth, so it is widely adaptable to contemporary art while still retaining its old elegance externally.
