Nobuhiko Utsumi has been creating his ‘Innerscape Series’ for 36 years since 1985, using scenes of deja-vu as his prototypes. His unique technique, in which pigments, ink and metal powder are allowed to flow and settle on the surface of the paper, has been developed over many years in order to trigger an interaction between body/mind and materials, and to activate the universal principle of morphogenesis. ‘The whole is omnipresent in every part of the screen, and a self-organised system of morphogenesis reveals the space-time of the creation of the universe that happened 13.8billion years ago and also the birth of life. At that moment, the work reveals that the universe is not just one ‘universe’ but a multiverse an astronomical number of 10 to the 500th power’ What is the fact that modern science has confirmed only 4% of the composition of the universe can actually tell us? Utsumi believes that modern scientism has divided the spiritual world from the material world, and that the limits of contemporary art, which has inherited the influence of this division, are also clear. He is on a quest of pictorial expression to regain the vast cosmic consciousness that we have lost.
