eitoeiko is pleased to announce the exhibition ‘Soaked Paintings’ by Satoshi Uchiyama. The exhibition is his first solo exhibition at eitoeiko. Satoshi Uchiyama was born in 1978, Kanagawa. He received BA Japanese painting in 2003 from Tama Art University and received MFA fine art in 2005 from Tama Art University. Uchiyama thought that after 3.11, Japanese people had to get renewal of their somatic sensation. Uchiyama saw the trace of the sea surface left behind to the surface of walls of the buildings swallowed up by tsunami, when the artist participated in the disaster volunteer at Ishinomaki. That spectacle looked like a flat surface grows up to a three-dimensional mass with weight. By soaking the canvas into the paint, the artist indicates the influence from the environment which we could never escape from it. The white canvas was governed by the power of the environment which surrounds it. The artist paradoxically attempts to act against the fate. Instead of by drawing or painting, he memorizes fashion, culture and history by soaking. That is conversion of value and the dawn of new era.
