Yoshiko Fukushima was born in Nagano in 1985. She graduated from the oil painting course of the College of Art and Design, Musashino Art University in 2009, and then moved her base of production to Nagano prefecture.
She chiefly draws figure paintings all of which have a unique character expression. Faces and hair drawn in various colors, and a certain peculiar look are the features of Fukushima’s work. Moreover, the figures’ bodies are stretched along the screen composition to produce a remarkable sense of existence with the help of vividly colored clothes. Such expression seems to catch the person in an iconographic way and the facial expressions are akin to that of a portrait. On the other hand, the faces seem to catch a glimpse of an expression shown from somewhere deep-inside. Her works with two or more people in them also show the existence of interpersonal communication between the figures. Even though it reinforces the feeling of severity of some personal mental situation, the background color and the characters’ expressions in the motif give a sense of expanse to the space, and provide a comfortable tension and calmness to the viewer who then becomes strongly attracted to the world of Fukushima’s work.
This exhibition showcases chiefly 20 works of her latest oil painting from thumbhole to 1621×1303mm size. I recommend you take this occasion to enjoy the works of Fukushima. She keeps searching for the possibility of character expression through her constant production. * The text provided by Gallery MoMo.
