Hasegawa Loka (1897-1967), an artist who lived in Fujisawa, is regarded as a pioneering figure responsible for formally introducing Fresco and Mosaic techniques to Japan. In 1964, he made a pair of large Mosaic murals at the former National Stadium, which was the main venue for Tokyo Olympics. The murals have been relocated and are now available for viewing at The Japan National Stadium. After studying Japanese painting, he then moved onto Europe (1921-27). While exhibiting his oil paintings at the salons, Loka also worked on copying the Buddhist murals of Central Asia, exploring various kinds of painting techniques – East and West, old and new. This exhibition mainly introduces the Fujisawa city collection of artworks from his youth, along with their restoration process.
